P3.2 — Critique and Defense
P3.2 — Actualization Is Ongoing
Statement
Constraint over a settled whole cannot be operative.
If every outcome were already fixed, constraint across alternatives would decide nothing. It would only mark which configuration is actual—delineation, not operation.
Therefore, actualization is ongoing, not complete. Possibility is not only real but, in part, unresolved.
P3.2 introduces no new premise. It makes explicit what P2 and P3 already require.
Continuity From Prior Claims
P3.2 follows from the preceding chain:
- P2 establishes that distinctions which make no difference to what occurs are indistinguishable from non-distinctions, and that order requires operative distinction.
- P3 establishes that operative distinction must constrain what can and cannot occur among alternatives, and that possibilities are therefore real features of reality.
- IR 8 establishes that structure which delineates without binding has no force: the Mandelbrot set classifies membership and binds nothing.
P3.2 addresses a remaining question:
Is possibility real only in the sense that other configurations are consistent, or also in the sense that some outcomes are not yet settled?
P3 alone does not answer this. P3.2 does.
Common Critiques
- “Modality is not temporal. Possibility concerns what could be, not what is undecided.”
- “Relativity has no universal present. An open future requires one.”
- “An indeterministic block still has real chance. Settled is not the same as determined.”
- “Future contingents already have truth values.”
- “God’s eternal knowledge does not cause the future. A complete divine view leaves modality intact.”
- “This contradicts the time-neutral formulation adopted in IR 9.”
Defense
Why Modality Cannot Be Merely Descriptive
The eternalist can accept every sentence of P3 by reading “possibility” as consistency: other configurations are coherent, and one of them is the actual one.
On that reading, the alternatives were never in contention. Nothing was decided among them. The constraint did not exclude them; it only marks them as non-actual.
That is delineation. P2 has already shown that distinctions which make no difference to what occurs are indistinguishable from non-distinctions. In a settled whole, nothing occurs. Everything simply is.
The eternalist keeps the vocabulary of modality and loses its content. This is not a rival account of possibility. It is possibility described rather than possibility operative.
Constraint is operative only where it decides. It decides only where something remains to be decided.
Why Relativity Does Not Defeat P3.2
Special relativity shows that there is no observer-independent simultaneity across spacelike-separated events. It does not show that actualization is complete.
P3.2 makes no claim about physical simultaneity. It does not require a privileged frame within physics or a universal “now” that physics could detect.
It requires only that actuality not be a completed totality. The ordering of actualization is grounded in the Ground (C4), whose sequence need not be the metric time of physics.
The relativistic objection shows that physical time does not single out a global present. P3.2 does not ask it to.
Why an Indeterministic Block Is Still a Block
Indeterminism concerns how outcomes relate to prior states: the past does not fix the future.
Eternalism concerns whether outcomes are already actual: every event exists at its location in spacetime.
A block containing indeterministic transitions is still a block. Every outcome, however unpredictable from earlier slices, is already there. No alternative is in contention at any point.
P3.2 targets the completed totality, not determinism. Real chance inside a finished whole is chance in name only.
Why Future Contingents Do Not Settle the Future
If a statement about the future is already true because the future outcome is already actual, the critique simply restates eternalism.
If it is true in virtue of present conditions and tendencies, it does not make the outcome actual.
P3.2 is compatible with semantic frameworks in which future contingents are not yet settled. It is incompatible only with truthmakers located in an already-actual future—which is the claim in dispute.
Why Classical Theism Faces the Same Problem
The classical objection is that God’s eternal knowledge is not causal: God sees what will be without determining it.
P3.2 does not claim knowledge causes outcomes. Its claim is structural: if all outcomes are eternally present as settled—whether to a timeless knower or as regions of spacetime—then no alternative is ever in contention, and constraint across alternatives decides nothing.
A God who is complete, lacking nothing, and unchanging, and a block universe in which everything is already actual, share one structure: a totality in which nothing occurs. Both reduce modality to description.
The question is not who knows the whole. The question is whether there is a whole to know.
Relation to IR 9
IR 9 adopts a time-neutral formulation of the Ground’s orientation: every actuality stands in immediate relation to the orientation, whether physical time is fundamental, emergent, or perspectival.
That formulation stands. P3.2 does not require physical time to be fundamental, and it does not require the orientation to change.
What P3.2 adds is a limit IR 9 did not state: the orientation cannot be preserved over a completed totality, because a preference among alternatives none of which remains in contention is a description, not a preference.
IR 9’s neutrality concerns physical time. P3.2’s commitment concerns actuality.
What P3.2 Does Not Claim
P3.2 does not claim:
- that presentism is true (it is compatible with presentism, growing-block views, and others that deny a completed totality),
- that the past remains open,
- that physics must recognize a privileged present,
- that the future is unknowable in every respect,
- that the Ground’s capacity or orientation changes.
It claims one thing: actuality is not a finished whole.
Summary Defense
P3.2 follows from the Canon’s continuity:
- Order requires operative distinction (P2).
- Operative distinction constrains what can and cannot occur among alternatives (P3).
- Constraint that only delineates has no force (IR 8).
- In a settled whole, nothing occurs, and constraint only delineates.
Therefore:
Actualization is ongoing. Possibility is not only real but, in part, unresolved.
This preserves the content of modality against views that keep only its vocabulary—whether stated in the language of physics or of theology.
